Phineas T. Barnum was a showman, politician, businessman, and founder of the Barnum and Bailey Circus.  Famous for his pranks, hoaxes, and quotes. “Nobody ever lost a dollar by underestimating the taste of the American Public.”

Thursday, August 12th, 7:30 PM:  SLED ZOOM SPECIAL EVENT!!!:  Lisa See Joins us LIVE via Zoom to discuss her best-selling novel  The Island of Sea Women!  Explore a unique culture where women go to the sea daily while men stay home to care for children. See depicts this world in vivid, sensuous detail, including the foods eaten by villagers, the songs sung by the divers and the rites by a female shaman who channels the voices of the dead.
Tuesday, August 17,  2:00 PM:  ARTFUL JOURNEYS is an arts education program designed to teach new skills, widen horizons and allow participants to experience art and culture of a region from an artist’s point of view.  Join us when art historian and tour guide Sevan Melikyan offers a tour of Provence, France.
Thursday, August 19,  7:30 PM   SLED BOOK CLUB:  Fifty Words for Rain by Asha Lemmie  Fifty Words for Rain follows eight-year-old Nori after she is abandoned by her mother and left to fend for herself in the unkind graces of a family built on tradition and power.
Monday, August 23rd,_1:00 PM: Harry Getzov, our SLED favorite entertainment storyteller, presents “ED SULLIVAN.”  Ed Sullivan was an American television personality, impresario, sports and entertainment reporter, and syndicated columnist for the New York Daily News and the Chicago Tribune New York News Syndicate. He is principally remembered as the creator and host of the television variety program The Toast of the Town, later popularly—and, in 1955, officially—renamed The Ed Sullivan Show. Broadcast for 23 years from 1948 to 1971, it set a record as the longest-running variety show in US broadcast history.  Sullivan was a broadcasting pioneer at many levels during television’s infancy, presenting rock acts as well as jazz and classical music and theater, as well as anointing and popularizing young comedians and singers.

Monday, August 30th, 1:00 PM:  Lincoln As A Trial Lawyer

Most people never think of Abraham Lincoln in his time as a practicing attorney, riding a circuit in his home state and taking whatever legal matter came his way.  He was reputed to be a superb trial lawyer, and his last important trial, a murder case, occurred in the year prior to his election as president.  The outcome may have even assisted in his political career.
